Effective teaching depends on creating memories for the material or skills to be learned. It is important to create memories which are durable and accessible, which can only be done by using multi-sensory techniques. This presentation looks at the different aspects of memory, how they interact and how to develop them. It also analyses memory processes, including storage and retrieval. The presentation also covers the particular difficulties faced by SLD pupils and how teaching strategies can be adapted to cater for pupils with memory deficits. Particular emphasis is given to the relevance of different aspects of memory to the various stages of literacy development.
