            The Learning Staircase: Lucid Research

Experts in the computerised assessment of dyslexia

Lucid’s product development is backed up by intensive scientific and educational research. The following give some examples of the ways in which we work. To visit individual research pages click on any of the links below...

  • Lucid’s development team work very closely with psychologists at the University of Hull, as well as with educational consultants, to ensure that its assessment systems conform to the highest psychometric and educational standards.

  • Lucid’s products conform to the Guidelines for the Development and Use of Computer-Based Assessments (1999) published by the Professional Affairs Board of the British Psychological Society.

  • Product development involves extensive field-testing with large samples of appropriate participants. These participants include children in schools and nurseries all over the UK, students in colleges and universities, and adults in various centres.

  • Lucid’s products have been subjected to rigorous statistical standardisation procedures, carried out according to scientifically accepted psychometric principles, which provide reliable norms. Products are also validated against established assessment systems.

  • Lucid’s scientists also follow a parallel programme of publication of research findings in reputable journals and other scientific outlets.

  • CoPS was chosen by the British Dyslexia Association for its Early Intervention Project, which took place in 85 school in four LEAs during 1996–97. A survey of these schools in July 1997, revealed a high degree of teacher satisfaction with the system. 94% of schools reported that CoPS was ‘very useful’ or ‘moderately useful’.

  • The main advantages of the system cited by teachers were...

    (a) that it identified strengths and weaknesses,
    (b) its particular value in early identification,
    (c) the confirmation that it could give to a teacher who already suspected a problem,
    (d) its high appeal to children, and
    (e) its ease of use.

  • Lucid’s products have featured in several TV programmes, including BBC Nine O’Clock News, the BBC1 QED programme Lost for Words (1996) and the BBC2 programme Dyslexia in Primary Schools (1997). Lucid’s products have also featured in the press on many occasions, including the Daily Telegraph, Independent, Daily Express, Daily Mail, Yorkshire Post and Times Educational Supplement.

  • Lucid products are now used in over 5,000 schools in the UK, Eire and elsewhere in the world. The Swedish version (KoPS), developed in conjunction with ReLS (Resource Centre for Reading and Writing Difficulties) in Bollnäs, Sweden is widely used in Sweden and is available from Elevdata. CoPS 4-8, developed in collaboration with Anastasis is now being trialled in Italy. A Norwegian version is being developed together with Normedia. Versions of Lucid products are now being specially adapted for use in schools and other institutions in the USA and Canada.
